On May 19, 2013, Lower Gwynedd Elementary's very first Girls on the Run (GOTR) team successfully completed a 5k at Wissahickon High School. Nineteen third-thru-fifth grade LGE girls ran with running buddies and coaches. This was the culmination of a 12-week after-school program led by LGE staff members and LGE moms. We followed a fun experience-based curriculum that creatively integrated running on LGE’s morning miles track and Lower Gwynedd Township trails. Our lessons included topics such as: diversity, uniqueness, choosing to respect oneself, others and community, the meaning of inner beauty, the importance of being physically and emotionally healthy, and standing up for ourselves, and not giving into peer pressure, bullying or gossip. We also completed a community service project that included cleaning up the trails around our school and community. GOTR is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. GOTR aims to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
