Spotlight Story: Bridges to Employment
On April 5, forty-five tenth graders, as part of the Bridges To Employment program, were guests at the Johnson and Johnson Springhouse facility for Research and Development. Johnson and Johnson has partnered with Wissahickon High School and Montco Community College to mentor students in a three year exploration of careers in the health care industry. Earlier in the year students visited MC3 Biotechnology Labs where they isolated DNA. At J&J, the students toured state of art research labs, seeing how technology is employed to assist in the identification and development of new medicines. J&J mentors interacted with the students, sharing their career paths and giving advice for pursuing the myriad of career options to be found within health care. Experiencing how international conferences are conducted using a Global Connect system “was amazing”, commented student Amanda Mitchell. The day, according to Anna Morgan, “was really interesting. Everyone here was very nice and welcoming.” The students left with a better vision of how science and math can lead to exciting career options.
