School Start and End Times Options 2022-2023

2023-2024 School Start and End Time Information

During the 2022-23 school year, the district developed two final school start and end time options with the input of students, staff, families and community members, in addition to the option of maintaining our current schedule. Two additional options, which proposed that elementary schools start earlier, were eliminated from further consideration based on community feedback, as well as the higher cost of additional busing needs. The remaining two options push school start and end times later at WHS, WMS and our elementary schools.

The global considerations listed below are a helpful way to understand the framework by which the school start and end time options must be designed.

Global Considerations

  • All changes to the current schedule will have an impact across the community. Starting school later means schools also dismiss later, which affects after school co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and other out-of-school responsibilities for students, families, and staff. This includes, but is not limited to, jobs, volunteer work, childcare, homework, downtime, family time, etc.
  • Pushing back start times might require the district to switch from a two-tier busing system to three-tiers.  A three-tier busing system adds additional bus runs for NMTCC and nonpublic schools that operate on school schedules that will not change, OR WSD students in grades 6-12 no longer riding the same bus. This will result in increased costs for buses, drivers, and/or extended hours for drivers at a time when WSD and other districts are experiencing bus and driver shortages.
  • All options will create scheduling conflicts for NMTCC students and will increase the amount of instructional time lost for WHS and WMS student-athletes.

Below, there is a comprehensive breakdown of these areas of impact for the two options. The School Board will consider these two revised schedules, as well as the option of maintaining the current schedule. Click on the down arrows for each topic to learn more.
