In alignment with the district’s vision, our affinity groups continue to grow and offer students supportive and brave spaces of belonging and inclusion. Our secondary affinity groups provide a host of wonderful opportunities for students. “As members of affinity groups, students can build their leadership skills, enhance their social emotional awareness, enjoy meaningful connections, and engage in affirming and empowering learning experiences, said Keziah La Torre, Director of Equity and Cultural Responsiveness.

In the 2023-24 school year, WHS students founded two new groups, the Black Student Union and the Hispanic Latine Association, which complement the Indian Cultural Association, Jewish Student Union, Asian Student Association, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Celebrating All Students’ Achievement. The WMS affinity groups also include the Asian Student Association; Conectados; and Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

A high participation rate in the groups and positive feeback from our students underscores their importance:

Hispanic/Latine Association - "I was prompted to start a new club where Hispanic/Latine students, especially those who are immigrants and may struggle with the English language, and are trying to adapt to a new country, can have a safe place to socialize and feel comfortable sharing their ideas and make good connections with other people, "said Hispanic/Latine Association co-president Alejandro Macias Abioitiz who moved to the U.S. two years ago. "Anyone can join though - it doesn't matter race or ethnicity - because we also want to teach our district what the Hispanic community actually looks like and break stereotypes." 

Gender and Sexuality Alliance - “I love being in the GSA because it has helped me find a place where I'm not afraid to joke around, or really be myself. It's a great group that has a good combination between homework and finding ways to help our school become more accepting to everyone. It is a community that I always look forward to and it has an amazing welcoming atmosphere,“ said a WMS GSA member.

“It's a safe place," said another member. "It connects you to your people and we can help fellow LGBTIA+ people.”
