Thanks to our WHS alumni who attended the 12/4 Black Student Union (BSU) meeting to discuss historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), including academic programs, the admissions process, campus life and culture. More than 30 WHS students attended and appreciated hearing about HBCUs from our former students.

In the photo on the left, Devin Boatright ’21 and four of his friends from Morgan State University spoke to the students about their experiences with the admission process, juggling academic demands, and the benefits of attending an HBCU. The photo on the right shows Heaven Lassiter ’17 who shared information and stories about attending Lincoln University, the nation’s first HBCU.

Big shoutout to senior, Gavyn Lewis-Richmond, who founded the Black Student Union at WHS this year and is supported by Co-President Camryn McKnight and Vice President is Gabe Lassiter (pictured in the middle). Open to all students, the BSU serves to develop community and fellowship amongst African American high school students across academic levels and socioeconomic status; provide brave space and peer support (socially and academically); and address the advocacy needs of Black students so that they feel a greater sense of belongingness, as an integral part of the High School community. Moving forward, the club is hosting speakers who can help our students make better-informed decisions about course and program selection to reach their goals.
