Shout out to our WHS students who started a new affinity group this year, the Muslim Student Association!
“I started the Muslim Student Association because I wanted to bring the Muslims in the school together even if we’re from different backgrounds and race. I also wanted to bring non-Muslims into the group to break stereotypes and bond together. I sometimes feel like there is tension among certain groups and the purpose of the MSA at Wiss is to break that down and help people become accepting of everyone else,” said Abdu Eleida, President of the MSA.
The club is currently meeting during IE (Intervention and Enhancement), but the students hope to make it an after-school club where it’s more accessible. They are planning an introduction meeting for students to come learn about the club and play games.
“We want to slowly break away the barriers and stereotypes about Muslims and how people perceive us,” said Laila Elmoghazy, 10th grade. “You can’t easily tell if somebody is Christian or if they are Jewish or Muslim, so you may feel alone and can’t really connect to your roots. That gives you a sense of isolation – like nobody here is similar to me…I’m completely different. So, creating the club will build recognition – there’s more people you can connect to and feel similar to – and become more comfortable in the environment. I made a lot of new friends!”
